Isopropyl alcohol (also Isopropanol,
propan-2-ol, 2-propanol or the abbreviation IPA) is the simplest
example of a secondary alcohol.
Its chemical formula is CH(CH3)2OH.
It is a colorless, flammable chemical
compound with a strong sweet odour.
Being a secondary alcohol, isopropyl alcohol
can be oxidized to acetone.
Isopropanol is used as a solvent and
extraction solvent and as antifreeze in motor fuels, the manufacture
of pharmaceuticals, acetone and other chemicals.
Inhalation or ingestion of large amounts may
cause headache, dizziness, vomiting and in severe cases
unconsciousness.
The liquid will degrease the skin. Repeated
skin contact may cause dermatitis. Eye contact is irritating.
Isopropyl alcohol is highly flammable, with
atmospheric oxygen and light can form explosive peroxides.
